The Passion of the Mel

By now you have already heard about Mel Gibson’s anti-Semitic outburst.

Shameful? Yes.

A cry for help? Probably.

What is more shameful is the two-faced people who pretend to be outraged by Mel’s anti-Semitism but are at the same time outraged by Israel defending itself against state-sponsored terrorist actors. Terrorists that aim to bring about the destruction of the worlds only predominantly Jewish nation.

Hi, I've just seen what you said on blevins blog, and just in case you didn't read it i wanted to say the following:
sorry mate but you can't put all people who object to what Israel are doing in the box labelled "supports terrorism". Personally I don't give a crap whether your black white, jewish, whatever, if you do something that is discriminatory to another racial/social group then I have a problem with you. Furthermore, if you do anything that causes violence towards another race or social group then I also have a problem. Hence the fact that I do no agree with what either Israel/Hizbollah/US and it's allies/ Al qaida etc do. With regards to Israel, i think you'll find that most people who object do so because of the sheer scale in terms of Lebanese civilian targets and deaths, regardless of whether or not they agree with the actions of either side in general

I 4got to paste in the rest of my original comment from blevins

here it is: maybe the whole gibson thing was more complicated than I believed initially. What is true though is that for the immediate his career has been severely undermined. Lastly, i would have to say my initial post on the whole affair is probably my most popular for a while, so alot of people had an opinion on this. None of them were in defence of Mr Gibson though.

This i didn't say on blevins but I will here.

If Gibson really does hate jews then i feel very sorry for him. He must be a very bitter and twisted man if this is the case....

In regards to what happened in lebanon and the israeli solders. Wouldn't a campaign based more on intelligence and pin point use of elite forces be better?

It might be simplistic but it seems to me that the violence by BOTH sides will just engender more hate and more violence.

Furthermore, what about seeking cooperation and deals with the lebanese, Israel and UN security council members (especially US, UK, Russia) to rid everybody from hizbollah ?

Oh Canuck,

This is what we are deling with:

It might be simplistic but it seems to me that the violence by BOTH sides will just engender more hate and more violence.

Let's sing Gumbaya and we shall overcome.

I just hope this is just a kid.

i speak from the point of view as someone who served in my country's national guard (6 years). i am zionist (in the sense that israel certainly has a right to exist; however, of late my own religious beliefs have dictated that i see myself as a pacifist. I mention my background to you as a frame of reference. i saw your post on my friend dwayne's blog (real brothers) and felt compelled to post. it seems unfair to assume that anyone who disapproves of israel's response i automatically against the right of israel to defend herself. your post highlights the problem- there is only one way to solve this problem: either they destroy us or we destroy them. (believe me,before you write me off as a hopeless naif, i understand the deadly seriousness of the situation- I got into an argument with a Lebanese-american last week over this b/c he failed to take into account israel's right to protect itself from Hizbollah's continued attacks). However, I would point out that the problem that seems to be occurring is one my own country is making in Iraq (& Afghanistan). The more Israel attempts to wipe out terrorists, the more she makes them by killing civilians. It's a no-win situation and Hizbollah knows this. I understand that you are not a rabid anti-Muslim (and clearly you can see I am not an anti-Semite), but urge you to see that simply disagreeing with Israel's level of response does not equate with not believing she cannot defend herself.
ps- if i haven't pissed you off, would love to dialogue more with you backchannel

Ok, well I knew there would be a few interesting responses to my comments.....

First off- maybe i should have said this yesterday, Israel is a legitimate country and as such it has a right to defend itself. In this case I have to say i think the "defence" has been disproportionate to say the least. They've just created more enemies for themselves as we have by our actions in Iraq. I'm not suggesting negotiation with or appeasement of terrorists, the former is ompossible and the latter is immoral. However, i still feel that the actions of the allies in Iraq and the nature of Israels current actions are creating more enemies for us to fight further on down the road. Hizbollahs actions, and the actions of the terrorists in Iraq are of course doing the same, but somehow i think their power has to be diminished in other ways, eg more covert ways with more limited and highly targeted military action. What is happening now is only creating more hatred towards the west and Israel, and more opportunity for those arseholes to recruit.

With regards to Mel- the anti semetic comments should and will haunt him for a long time, however, equal concentration should be directed towards his sexist comment. As a woman (not kid-missing link) that is something that greatly concerns me.

Lastly, you seem to be making the point on blevins blog that all people who criticise the actions of Israel are anti semetic. I seriously hope that you change this somewhat black and white view. It's like saying all people who were against the first world war were wimps, or that all people who are american yet criticise the war in Iraq are anti patriotic, the list could go on. For me, and I suspect for more than you might think, religion is not relevant. I don't like the actions of the Israeli government in this case as they are disproportionate, in the same way i don't like the hateful actions of hizbollah, alqaida, mohammed al-zarqawi, suicide bombers etc.

I must admit when people use the word 'proportionate' I wonder what that means.

What does it mean?

If I said that Israel is being less than 'proportionate'.

Who could argue?

Since it isn't "cool" to be Anti-Semitic these days, people are using a more "politically correct" code language: Anti-Israel. Don't fool yourselves. It means the same thing. And further more, Mel Gibson was so drunk that the Anti-Semitism poured out of him in an uncontrolled stream. That's not cool.

The people you are talking about are probably more shocked that anyone could be so stupid as to talk like this out loud. Most bigots just mumble and whisper.

Did you feel that the movie "The Passion of the Christ" was anti-semitic?

^I didn't see it. My mom saw it and didn't feel it was anti-Semitic. Her comment was that Mel down-played the 'Jewishness' of Jesus but was wise not to be overtly anti-Semetic in the movie.

It's a matter of opinion. Did you see the movie and what are your thoughts?

I saw the movie - twice. I didn't think it was particularly unfair towards any race. I felt the portrayal was mostly tenable. And of course it was touching. It has a profound effect on viewers.

^I was warned not to see it as my stomach cant handle too much gore. I guess it was pretty bloody and did not spare any the graphic reality of the crucifixion.
